I finally got an assignment that had four main characters, and by the end of my first draft, there were 12. Gayden: For whatever reason, every project I take on has a billion characters and I just don’t know why I keep doing that. Speaking of this film’s massive ensemble cast, how did you find the balancing act of continuing to develop existing characters, while creating space to flesh out new ones? And how to juggle like 5,000 characters and tell the story and he really, really brought magic to that. We had all these characters, we had the theme, we knew the journey, we knew where we ended, but there was a lot of getting there and building up and mythology in the daughters. He came in and lent what I think is his superpower - which sounds like we practiced this, but I do think this - which is this superstructure in building story. So, I’ve known Chris for a bit and truly loved his movies and geeked out and told him some really nerdy Tokyo Drift stories when we first met. We’ve known each other for a bit doing rooms, and I think you came in and read the first Shazam! and talked to us. Henry Gayden: I think Chris is underselling his contribution a little bit. He’s able to bring it into a modern day with the film and the characters. He remembers the angst of growing up and all the little moments that I’ve kind of blocked out. But for some reason, can kind of get in there. Like, my teen years were - I mean, they were totally fine but - just very hard for me, and so I just have blotted them out. He has this kind of a superpower of being able to tap into a teen voice that I just have no access to. But listen, when you get a call like that, there’s no way you’re saying no. Some structural stuff on the back end and a little mythology, maybe blowing things up a little bit. I got a phone call from Walter Hamada and Henry and Peter Safran, and they said, “Hey, can you kind of come in for a few weeks and help out?” It was mostly just being a sounding board for them to bounce ideas off of. Henry had everything pretty much already in place on the second film. Chris - how did you come on to this project?Ĭhris Morgan: Well, for me, it was super easy. The co-writers sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about the film’s new villains, the audience reaction to that surprise Wonder Woman cameo and their hopes for the future of the franchise amid uncertainty. And although the film’s tepid box office opening and poor reviews hurt the likelihood of a third film, Fury of the Gods boasts a high audience rating of 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. With no current plans for a third Shazam! installment at the studio, the future of the franchise remains up in the air. The sequel arrives on the heels of major change at DC Studios, as James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired last year as the new co-chairs and co-CEOs of the Warner Bros. Shazam!, Fury of the Gods picks up two years after the events of the first film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel/ Zachary Levi) and the Shazam family experiencing growing pains and facing off against the daughters of Atlas, played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler. Take a look at these pages.’ I read that in there and I laughed so hard.” “Henry sends me an email, and he’s like ‘Hey, man, I did some work on this thing. “It literally is one of the greatest joys of me reading a script ever,” Morgan said of reading the nod for the first time. Gayden felt just as strongly about Morgan, and even wrote a Fast and Furious joke into into the script as a tribute. The Moor Othello, the gentle Desdemona, the villain Iago, the good-natured Cassio, the fool Roderigo, present a range and variety of character as striking and palpable as that produced by the opposition of costume in a picture. "The picturesque contrasts of character in 'Othello' are almost as remarkable as the depth of the passion. And no one who has ever felt the power of design and composition, of the unity given by form in all the arts, will fail to be conscious of the great gain that comes to 'Othello' from this concentration" (Bailey, 1929 p 167). That of the Elizabethan age proper, the drama of Greene, Kyd, Peek, Marlowe and the early work of Shakespeare, is characterized by its faith in vitality, its worship of the glorious processes of life, an expansion and elation of mind which corresponds directly to the upward movement of a prosperous and expanding society. These things then were the heritage of the Jacobean drama on the threshold of its growth: spiritual uncertainty springing in part from the spreading of Machiavellian materialism emphasized by Marlowe’s tragic thought and in still greater degree from the cause which has reproduced it today for us, fear of the impending destruction of a great civilization. After the spiritual nadir of the middle years of the period a slow return to equilibrium sets in.giving place to a mood that is sometimes serenity, sometimes indifference, but, in either case, that of an age that has ceased to live in touch with catastrophe. "The mood of the drama from the early Elizabethan to the late Jacobean period appears to pass through three phases, each reflecting with some precision the characteristic thought, preoccupation or attitude to the problems of man’s being of the period to which it belongs. If you decide to make your own, I have a simple little hack that will make your life so much easier. If you prefer to make life easier, simply purchase a pre-made set like one of these. However, if you are homeschooling your kindergartener or you want your child to have a personal set for practice at home, you can make them yourself (with index cards and a marker). If your child is in school, you will most likely get a set of these flashcards from the teacher. Using flashcards is a very simple yet effective way to teach sight words. This gives your child enough time to learn the new words while practicing the mastered words before moving on. So, if you notice your child is becoming frustrated or uninterested, take a break and start again later or switch up your learning activity.Īlso keep in mind that you only want to introduce 3-5 unfamiliar words at a time. Remember, children at this age learn best in small increments. You can switch things up and rotate through this list every week, or you can stick with the ones your child finds the most interesting.įor kindergartners to master their sight words, they need to practice and review the words every day for 10 to 15 minutes. The key is keeping the review activities enjoyable for your child. Otherwise, sight words are going to be a very abstract concept. One important thing to remember is that before a child can begin memorizing sight words, they need to understand the basics of letters and sounds. We know that every child learns a little bit differently, so having many different ways to practice and engage with the sight words is important for memorization. From second grade to fifth grade, students will master 100 additional words per year. While the Common Core State Standards indicate that students should be able to recognize high-frequency words, there is not a specific number indicated.ĭuring first grade, the first 50 words are reviewed from kindergarten, and then 50 new words are introduced and mastered. The way the sight word list is broken down, by the end of your student’s kindergarten year they should master the first 50 words, but it’s quite common in many schools to see a requirement of the first 100 words. In 1980 after another list update, these 1000 words (most commonly occurring in children’s books) became the Fry Sight Word List.īut don’t freak out and think your kindergartener needs to learn all 1000 words!! These 1000 words are mastered over the course of kindergarten thru fifth grade! How Many Sight Words Should a Kindergartener Know? Edward Fry came along in the 1950s and revamped the Dolch list by adding and omitting words due to relevance. He invented this list because he found them appearing often in children’s books. The Dolch sight word list came from an educator in the 1930s known as Dr. These sight word lists are not the same, but sometimes you will hear them being used interchangeably. The strategy behind memorizing sight words is that once students have become proficient, they will be able to identify and pronounce them within 3 seconds of viewing. Basically, sight words break the rules of normal spelling patterns, which is one reason they can be frustrating to teach. Sight words are words that need to be memorized in order to learn them because they cannot be sounded out. A Momentary Lapse of Reason surpassed quadruple platinum status in the U.S, spawning the year's biggest tour and a companion live album, 1988's The Delicate Sound of Thunder. "Roger's criticisms are fair," Wright agreed in the book Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd. Waters stated flatly that it was not a true Pink Floyd release. Beyond a few standout tracks, the album as a whole didn't stand up to earlier triumphs. Still, A Momentary Lapse of Reason remains one of the band's most polarizing releases. A slowed down recording of Gilmour's laugh came across like a dog bark, and he decided to use it in the song. The session was buoyed by a sound that came about by mistake. "Dogs of War," a trudging track about political mercenaries, emerged as a favorite live cut. In a nod to the past, the blips and beeps at the beginning mirrored Pink Floyd's approach to "Money" from more than a decade earlier. It fit well with the more ethereal songs in their catalog like "Us and Them" and "Wish You Were Here." The third and final single was "One Slip," a collaboration with Phil Manzanera that began a lengthy musical relationship between Gilmour and the Roxy Music guitarist. "On the Turning Away," a more solemn piece referencing the issues of poverty and oppression, emerged as the second single. While work continued on "Learning to Fly," Gilmour said he came to realize a new lyrical subtext, as he assumed the band's leadership role following Waters' departure. Gilmour later purchased a De Havilland Devon airplane with Mason, whose voice was heard in the middle portion of this song via a cockpit recording. Gilmour and Mason had both been taking flying lessons, and Gilmour penned the track specifically about the feelings of freedom that flight gave him. Whatever their struggles, "Learning to Fly" quickly found an audience as the album's lead single. Watch Pink Floyd's Video for 'Learning to Fly' We didn't make this remotely like we've made any other Floyd record. "You have to find a new way of working, of operating and getting on with it. "You can't go back," Gilmour said in A Saucerful of Secrets. Contributions were made by Mason and, to a lesser degree, Wright but sessions musicians were ultimately brought in to supplement the sound. They likewise struggled with musical cohesion after so long away. Gilmour decided against attempting the band's typical concept record, focusing instead on finding the best collection of songs. Moving forward without Waters also proved difficult creatively. That cleared up some of the time-zone issues on the legal side, while allowing Pink Floyd to be closer to producer Bob Ezrin. Late-night calls from attorneys began to interfere, however, and the decision was made to move production to the U.S. Gilmour started recording A Momentary Lapse of Reason aboard his houseboat, the Astoria. The sessions provided their own challenges. Waters eventually relented, and a deal was struck where the band members could use the name so long as Waters could have the rights to The Wall. Anybody who does is extremely arrogant."Ī bitter legal fight played out during the creation of the album and followed after A Momentary Lapse of Reason arrived in stores. "No one else has claimed Pink Floyd was entirely them. But Gilmour refused to back down: "Roger is a dog in the manger and I'm going to fight him," Gilmour told the Sunday Times, as chronicled in the book A Saucerful of Secrets. Upset by their decision to move forward without him, Waters took the rest of the band to court over use of the name and attempted to thwart the release of A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Nick Mason expressed interest in new music, however, and by 1986, Gilmour was reshaping some solo material for what would become the 13th Pink Floyd studio album. Keyboardist Richard Wright's wife contacted Gilmour about lending a hand musically, but his full return was stalled by legal matters relating to his ouster during sessions for The Wall. Waters had declared Pink Floyd "a spent force," but Gilmour saw the potential in moving forward. Liquid Asset Partners has kept the company assets intact and indicates they will continue to do so until a buyer or major investor can be found. Liquid Asset Partners stated an intention to try to find a buyer experienced in motorcycle manufacture to re-establish the business. In January 2016, the remnants of Erik Buell Racing were sold to Liquid Asset Partners for just over $2 million, with the proceeds going to creditors (including Mito Tech and Porsche Design Group) and to former employees for unpaid wages. The auction had no bidders, and a move where the court-appointed receiver sought to sell the assets by accepting a pre-emptive offer from a private liquidation-company specializing in breaking-up company remnants was blocked by the judge, to allow more time for any potential new buyers to prepare their submissions, re-scheduling the hearing for early January 2016. The deal failed as Belfer was unable to secure financing for the $2.25 million purchase price, and the official receiver filed to re-sell the assets in a new round of bidding, so the remnants of Erik Buell Racing returned to auction on December 10, 2015. On April 15, 2015, Erik Buell Racing filed for receivership, with a reported $20 million of liabilities, and ceased all operations including closing down their website. The two companies announced that EBR will distribute Hero motorcycles and scooters in North America starting in the summer of 2014. On July 1, 2013, Hero MotoCorp, a motorcycle manufacturer based in India, acquired 49.2% stake in the company for $25 million. Erik Buell Racing's first efforts were directed toward production of complete, race-only motorcycles and parts based on the Buell 1125R production model, under license from Harley-Davidson, to support privateer racers. Liquid Asset Partners kept the company intact and motorcycle production resumed on March 1, 2016, the first new model rolling out on March 17, 2016.Įrik Buell founded Erik Buell Racing in November 2009 following the shutdown of his previous company, Buell Motorcycle Company, by parent company/majority stakeholder Harley-Davidson. The business entered receivership in April 2015. Erik Buell Racing ( EBR) is an American motorcycle sport company which produces street and racing motorcycles, based in East Troy, Wisconsin, USA. There have also been studies in humans that have found anti-androgenic effects on development of the male reproductive tract. In studies with rats, it’s been shown that if you dose the pregnant mother, the offspring have defects of the male reproductive tract. They’ve been shown to be anti-androgenic-in other words, they decrease testosterone. Q: Can you describe some of the health impacts of these chemicals?Ī: Phthalates have been very well studied in animal models. And phthalates are transferred from mother to fetus during pregnancy. Numerous studies have found links between personal care product use and concentrations of phthalate metabolites in urine. Phthalates can also migrate into indoor air and household dust from products like vinyl flooring and wall coverings. For example, it’s been shown that these chemicals can leach into food from vinyl plastic equipment and materials, food preparation gloves, and food packaging materials. One primary way that people can be exposed to phthalates is through diet. I would estimate that phthalates are used in many hundreds if not thousands of different products. Phthalates are also used in many personal care products such as colognes, perfumes, soaps, and shampoos, in the coatings of some medications, and in vinyl tubing used for food processing. Things like shower curtains, boots, and IV tubing are made from that same hard white plastic that a plumber would use, but when you add about 30% by weight to it of a specific phthalate, you get soft pliable vinyl plastic. One of their common uses is to soften vinyl plastic. They have many properties that make them useful in many different consumer products. Q: What are ortho-phthalates and where are they used?Ī: These chemicals-generally referred to as “phthalates”-are a family of compounds that has been widely used for well over 50 years. When it comes to picking sides, Wren said her character will side with whatever hero is best for the American people. In the new movie Swanwick and Farris will both have higher positions in the military when the saga continues. Wren said being a part of the scene that gets audiences excited about what’s next was "pretty exciting." At the time, Wren had no idea there was going to be a “Batman v Superman” movie, but she was happy when she got the call for the film two years later. Swanwick was still hesitant to trust him, but Superman said he trusts Swanwick. He then confronted General Swanwick (Harry Lennix) and told him that he was there to help, not harm, the American people. Her character in the movie, Farris, was a part of the scene in “Man of Steel” that laid some of the ground work for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” When Superman discovered the government was tracking him with a drone, he threw it down in a desert and destroyed it. Wren "freaked out" when she realized she was going to be a part of Snyder's take on Superman with "Man of Steel." It combined her love of the hero and the films Snyder makes. When I saw ‘300’ I had an overwhelming experience of wishing I can dive inside the screen and specifically be a part of that world,” Wren told IBT. "I was seeing a play and I literally had to hold onto the sides of my chair because I wanted to run up on stage and just dive right in, I felt I had to be a part of it. The moment reminded her of a time when she realized she wanted to get involved in acting and pursue it as a career. When she saw the movie "300" it further ignited her flame to want to participate in action flicks. The actress explained that she was obsessed with the Christopher Reeves " Superman" movies as a child and she always leans towards the Man of Steel as her favorite superhero. Wren grew up with a mother who introduced her to science fiction movies and got her interested in the action genre. Wren spoke to International Business Times about being a part of such a big movie in the DC Cinematic Universe, what fans can expect from "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and how Zack Snyder's "300" inspired her to be an action star. Christina Wren is living her childhood fantasy as she stars Carrie Farris in the film.
